What is Saturdays in the D?

Founded by Jimmy Settles, Group Executive for Neighborhoods at the Detroit Mayor’s Office, during his time at UAW-Ford, Saturdays in the D is a high-quality enrichment program brought to you by the Community Education Commission’s GOAL Line program.  Saturdays in the D provides enrichments and physical activity to Detroit youth (K-12) on the weekend.  Saturdays in the D programming exposes students to new skills, interests, and potential careers.  Experts lead courses in a variety of topics, such as Zumba, martial arts, soccer, wrestling, nutrition, health and wellness, culinary arts, chess, debate, photography, music, robotics, financial literacy, etiquette, karate, social media responsibility, theatre, crafts, and sewing. Students also have access to swimming and water safety courses!

Who runs Saturdays in the D?

Saturdays in the D is brought to you by the Community Education Commission and GOAL Line Detroit. Breanna Sullivan, Saturdays in the D Program Manager oversees program operations.  Each school site has a Site Supervisor who makes sure everything runs smoothly!

Who can participate in Saturdays in the D?

Saturdays in the D is open to all students in Kindergarten through 12th grade who live in Detroit.  You don’t have to be a student at one of the school sites or a DPSCD school to participate.  Any K-12 student who lives in Detroit is eligible to participate, however, capacity at each site is limited to 300 students.  Enrollment will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

Where will the program be located?

Saturdays in the D is offered at three school sites.  Families can register for the site that’s most convenient for them.

  • Saturday in the D @ Detroit Collegiate Preparatory at Northwestern (2200 W. Grand Blvd.)

  • Saturday in the D @ Mumford High School (17525 Wyoming Ave.)

  • Saturday in the D @ Marcus Garvey Academy (2301 Van Dyke)

When does the program run?

Saturdays in the D will begin on Saturday, March 2nd and end on June 15th.  A calendar of scheduled session dates is located here.

What does the program cost?

It’s free! There is no cost to register or participate.

What will my child do at the program?

Students will have a busy schedule from 9 AM – 1:30 PM each Saturday. 

Daily Schedule
8:30 AM - 8:55 AM: Arrival and Breakfast
9:00 AM - 10:15 AM: 1st Period Workshop
10:20 AM - 11:35 AM: 2nd Period Workshop
11:40 - 12:10 PM: Lunch
12:15 - 1:30 PM: 3rd Period Workshop
1:30 PM: Dismissal

The Saturday sessions are centered around the enrichment courses.  Students will participate in three courses each “semester.”  There will be two semesters in the program, each lasting 7 weeks.  On the registration form, students will rank their top 10 courses.  We will try our best to match students with their top choices!  Want to see what’s offered at each site?  Click here!

I hear Saturdays in the D offers parent workshops!  Is that true?

It is true!  Saturdays in the D offers free workshops to parents and guardians of students enrolled in the program.  Parent Workshops are offered during programming hours at each site. Click here to learn more about the workshops.

Does Saturdays in the D offer transportation?

No.  Saturdays in the D does not offer transportation at this time.

Does Saturdays in the D provide food to students?

Yes!  Students will receive a healthy breakfast and lunch each Saturday (for free!). 

Is there a dress code?

Students should be in comfortable appropriate clothing and athletic shoes. Items not permitted include sandals, flip flops, other non-athletic shoes, midriff shirts, mini-shorts, jeggings, leggings, hoodies, and clothing with profanity or drug paraphernalia.

Is my child required to attend every Saturday?

Yes!  Students are expected to attend every Saturday.  We know that things happen – sickness, family obligations, etc.  If your child has to miss programming, you should contact your Site Supervisor to let them know.  If students have more than three absences, they will lose their spot in the program. 

How can I sign up?

Families can register for Saturdays in the D at the Registration Kickoff events, February 16th from 9am – 12pm at each of the participating schools (Note: Registration event at Marcus Garvey will be held from 10 AM – 1 PM).  Online registration will open the week of February 18th on the GOAL Line website.  Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis and a waiting list will be created after each site fills up (max capacity is 300 students per site).

How many spots are there for students?

There will be 300 spots at each Saturdays in the D program site.  Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis and a waiting list will be created after each site fills up.  Families will be notified whether they received a spot within a week of completing the interest form.  We encourage you to attend the registration events on February 16!

What safety measures will be put in place during the program?

Students will be escorted to their enrichments by program staff.  Students in grades K-5 will also be escorted to the bathroom or for water breaks by a staff member.  They are not allowed to walk around alone!  Each site will also have a DPSCD school security officer on site. 

At dismissal, students will be escorted to the site entrance by Saturdays in the D staff.  Students in grades K-5 must be picked up by a parent, guardian, or approved pick-up contact (listed on the registration form); K-5 students will not be dismissed without an approved adult present.  Students in grades 6-12 may leave on their own (walking, bus, parent pickup) unless the parent/guardian indicates differently.

How will I know if the program is closed?

Parents will be notified by email if the location is closed for any reason.
